How to Play and the Betting Options

Beyond the core Ante and Play structure, most tables offer additional wagers. Understanding what each one costs is the difference between a game with a modest house edge and one with a heavy one.

• Ante and Play. The base game. Played correctly, the combined house edge is roughly 3.4 percent of the Ante, or about 2 percent of the total amount wagered.

Three Card Poker has an optimal strategy short enough to memorise in a sentence, which is unusual for a casino card game.

The Q-6-4 rule

Make the Play bet with Queen-Six-Four or better; fold anything worse. This single rule is essentially optimal - deviating from it costs money, and the popular alternatives all perform worse. Always playing every hand gives away a great deal over time, and folding too readily is almost as expensive because you forfeit the Ante with no chance of the dealer failing to qualify.

Everything else

• Compare Pair Plus paytables. They vary between games, and the difference in house edge is substantial. If the paytable is poor, skip the bet.
• Treat the Six Card Bonus as entertainment. The payouts are eye-catching precisely because the hands almost never occur.
• Keep your bet size flat. There is no count, no streak and no pattern in a shuffled deck, so progressive staking only increases your exposure.
