The rules that carry most of the value

• Always split aces and eights, and never split tens or fives.
• Double on eleven against any dealer upcard except an ace on most rule sets.
• Stand on hard seventeen or higher, always.
• Stand on twelve through sixteen when the dealer shows two through six, since the dealer is most likely to bust there.
• Hit those same totals when the dealer shows seven or higher.
• Never take insurance. It is a side bet with a poor edge regardless of your hand.

Choosing the Right Table

Table rules change the house edge more than most players realise, and checking them takes seconds.

• Blackjack payout: three to two is standard and favourable. Six to five noticeably increases the house edge for identical play, and it is the single most important thing to check.
• Dealer on soft seventeen: a dealer who stands is better for you than one who hits.
• Doubling after split: allowed is better than not allowed.
• Number of decks: fewer decks favour the player, all else equal.
• Surrender availability: late surrender is a small but genuine benefit on bad hands.
