How to Play a Hand Correctly

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal response to every combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard. It is not a theory or a system; it is the solved answer, and it is freely available in chart form.

1. Read the dealer's upcard first. It decides everything. A dealer showing 2 to 6 is likely to bust, so you stand on more hands. Showing 7 to ace, they are strong, so you draw more aggressively.
2. Always split aces and eights. Two aces become two hands with the best starting card; a pair of eights turns a poor 16 into two playable hands.
3. Never split tens or fives. Twenty is already a winning hand, and a pair of fives is a ten that should usually be doubled.
4. Double on 11, and on 10 against a weak upcard. These are the hands where the extra stake carries a genuine edge.
5. Decline insurance. It is a side bet on the dealer holding a ten, and it loses money over time regardless of what you hold.

Drill the chart in demo mode until the responses are automatic. Hesitating at a live table is where players fall back on instinct, and instinct is what the house edge feeds on.

Only play 3:2 blackjack

A natural blackjack should pay three to two. Tables paying six to five add roughly 1.4 per cent to the house edge, which swamps every gain basic strategy gives you. This is the single most valuable check you can make before sitting down.

Look for player-friendly rules

Fewer decks, dealer standing on soft 17, doubling allowed after a split, and late surrender availability all shift the edge in your favour. Each is worth a fraction of a per cent, and they add up.

Skip the side bets

Perfect Pairs, 21+3 and similar wagers are designed to look like small gambles with big upside. Their house edge typically runs several times that of the main game, so they undo careful play quickly.

Manage the bankroll

Card counting, honestly

Counting has no effect on software blackjack, where the deck is reshuffled every hand. In live dealer games the shoe is real, but continuous shuffling, multiple decks and betting limits make it impractical for most players. Treat it as interesting background rather than a plan.
